New MN Cannabis Law and the Impact on International Students and Scholars The state of Minnesota recently passed a law legalizing recreational marijuana for adults over the age of 21, effective August 1. It is important for individuals who are not citizens of the United States to understand that although Minnesota has legalized the use of marijuana, federal law still prohibits the use or possession of marijuana. If you are not a U.S. citizen, violations of federal law can negatively impact your immigration status. The best advice for anyone who is not a U.S. citizen is to avoid using marijuana. For more information, Student Legal Services has posted an FAQ on the new law on their home page.
